About French Learners Castle
A Toronto French school built on one stubborn idea: you learn to speak by speaking, badly, from the first lesson.
Why this school exists
French Learners Castle was founded in Toronto by VandanaThukral after watching too many capable adults conclude they were ‘bad at languages’ when the real problem was a method that kept them silent for months.
The name is not an accident. A castle is something you build stone by stone and then live inside — which is exactly what a second language becomes once you stop treating it as a subject and start treating it as a place.
We teach adults chasing PR points, parents who want to help with Immersion homework, retirees with a house in France, and teenagers who have decided French is not for them. The method does not change much. The patience does.
What we hold ourselves to
Speaking from day one
If you leave a lesson without having said something real in French, we did it wrong.
Honest assessment
We will tell you when your target date is unrealistic, and when a free resource would serve you better than a paid course.
Mistakes are the material
Nobody is corrected into silence here. Errors get written down and worked on, not performed back at you.
Two Frenches, no snobbery
Québécois and Métropolitain both taught and both respected. In Canada you will meet both.
Small groups, always
Eight learners is a hard cap, not a target we drift past when demand is high.
No lock-in
No auto-renewing subscriptions, no expiring packages, no cancellation mazes.
The method, in four ideas
Situation before rule
You meet the language inside a scene you can picture, then learn why it works that way.
Production over recognition
Recognising French is not knowing French. Every activity ends with you producing something.
Error as data
Your specific mistakes drive the next lesson plan. We keep notes on every learner.
Pressure, gently applied
Comfortable practice does not transfer to real conversation. We add just enough pressure to make it stick.
The teaching team
Every instructor is a certified language teacher; several hold DELF and DALF examiner training, and all of them have taught adult beginners long enough to have lost any impatience with them.
We hire for temperament as much as credentials. The ability to wait ten seconds while a nervous learner finds a word — instead of supplying it — is the single most important skill in this job.
- Certified instructors, background-checked
- Native and near-native speakers from France, Québec and West Africa
