If you are claiming French points for Express Entry, you will sit either the
TEF Canada or the TCF Canada. Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts both, converts both to the same NCLC
scale, and does not prefer one over the other. So the choice is purely tactical:
which exam suits the way you actually perform?

The short answer

Take the TCF if you are a strong reader who freezes under open-ended
questions. Take the TEF if you think fast, improvise well, and would rather talk
your way through a task than pick from four options.

Where they genuinely differ

Speaking

TEF speaking is two tasks: you obtain information from the examiner, then you
persuade them of something. It rewards initiative — candidates who sit back and
answer politely tend to underperform.

TCF speaking is three shorter tasks that escalate from a guided interview to a
structured argument. It is gentler at the start, which helps nervous candidates,
but the third task punishes anyone who has not practised organising an argument
out loud.

Listening

TEF listening moves quickly and includes short, noisy, realistic clips. TCF
listening is more evenly paced but includes some deliberately close distractors
in the options.

Writing

TEF writing asks you to complete a news item and then write an opinion piece.
TCF writing has three tasks, including a message and a comparison of two
documents. If synthesising two texts is a skill you already have, TCF is
friendlier.

What actually determines your score

After several hundred candidates, the pattern is dull but consistent: people
lose points on task relevance and timing, not on grammar. A grammatically
scrappy answer that does exactly what the task asked will outscore an elegant
answer that drifted.

A sensible preparation sequence

  1. Sit a full marked mock of both exams before choosing.
  2. Pick the one where your weakest section scored higher.
  3. Spend six of your eight preparation weeks on that weakest section.
  4. Do two full timed mocks in the final fortnight.

Requirements and formats change. Always confirm the current standard with
IRCC and the test centre before you book. If you want a marked diagnostic to
start from, our exam prep track begins with one.
